Authentic Original Laudanum Bottle
Bottle #2
This is a post-1900 laudanum bottle which was prepared by Cook, Everett & Pennell of Portland, Maine.
There are many photos of this bottle of Laudanum as this is an absolute original,
with a good, strong label that is complete and fully readable. The top of the cork is
still intact, and the bottom of the cork, even though it is sealed tightly in the bottle
has absorbed part of the liquid, making it all that much more nostalgic looking.
About two-thirds of the liquid, a brown colored substance which is considered nowdays poison,
still remains in the bottle.
The bottle comes in its original cardboard box, though the box is missing its top, it is still in
rather excellent condition. The bottle has no chips or breaks - the bottle is in mint condition.
It bottle stands 5 inches tall, 1 and 1/2 inches wide and a little less than 1 inch deep.
It's the pocket sized variety - which was easily hidden in a purse or pocket to avoid
detection from others back in those days.
The label reads:
LAUDANUM
POISON
Each fluid ounce rep-
resents 48 grs. OPIUM
and 45% ALCOHOL
And then it gives the antidote, dose and stating that it is guaranteed by Cook et al under
the Food and Drug Act, June 30, 1906.
Laudanum was a mixture of alcohol, opium and a little sugar to flavor it up.
More than a century later, a lot of these bottles are getting much harder to find, especially with labels intact
as most were broken up when they hit the other bottles in the bottoms of the outback privies.
All bottles are sold only for collector purposes
and contents must not be used in any way. This item is being sold as a collectible only and
