A little history on Dr. McMunn's;
In a contribution to the American Journal of Pharmacy in 1846,
Augustine Duhamel had this to say about McMunn's: "A preparation much in
vogue at the present time, and known as McMunn's Elixir of Opium, is supposed
to be a solution of meconate of morphine, obtained from a cold infusion of opium,
to which wine has been added in sufficient quantity to insure its preservation."
This potent concoction dates back to 1835 or so when McMunn came up with it, and
he later sold it to druggists A.B. & D. Sands in 1841.
A portion from above: ". . . It possesses all the sedative, anodyne, and antispasmodic powers
of Opium . . . Hence its high superiority over Laudanum, Paregoric, Black Drop, Denarcotized
Laudanum, and every other Opiate preparation."
The Elixer of Opium is also greatly superior to Morphine . . . is a triumph in the
chemical analysis of Opium never before achieved, and places the Elixer of Opium
pre-eminent in the list of all the preparations of Opium hitherto made."
