A little History about Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup
First marketed in 1849 as "Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup", the popularity of
this medicine climbed to incredible heights under the management of Jeramiah
Curtis and Benjamin Perkins, and soon spawned many imitators.
This is one of the notorious "baby killer" narcotic opium teething syrup bottles
for babies. Many collectors refer to this SOOTHING SYRUP as a baby killer, because of
the powerful narcotic morphine and alcohol combination. It was marketed as a teething
syrup for babies and was very addictive and destructive.
Mrs. Charlotte N. Winslow, a devoted female physician and nurse studied teething
among infants. She made a soothing syrup for children, the ingredients of which
contained sulphate of morphia, sodium carbonate, spirits of foeniculi, and aqua
ammonia. This medicine not only "soothed" the child, but relieved the pain of
teething or other ailments. A great number of children ended up dying of an overdose as
a result of the Morphine contained in the medicine.
