Baule Trance Sacrifical Monkey Sculpture
Owned only by trance diviners and certain families, the Baule Monkey Figure usually
resides hidden outside under a shelter. The sculpture is said to feed on sacrifices
brought from the bush and poured all over the figure, leaving it filthy and encrusted.
Mbra cult monkey figures often known as Gbekre, standing on a circular base
with bent muscular legs, the cylindrical torso with long bent arm holding a cup to the front,
the front clad in pieces of cloth or animal skin, the simian head with
pointed snout and pointy sharp teeth, encrusted in patina and much dust,
some dirt and other unmentionables.
This piece came from the Baule peoples of the Cote d'Ivoire, West Africa
Height is 25 inches from base to top of head.

Excellent Condition: Held by a private collector of eclectic pieces located in the Seattle

Related animal figures are used for many different cult amongst the Baule. In some cases,
the figures are secret and, for example, women are forbidden to see them, while in cults the
sculptures are openly shown. The cupped hands at the front of the figure are for offerings
and the encrustation on the figure attests to years of libations.
