Victorian Hotchkiss No. 1 Stapler
For your consideration:
This is a Hotchkiss No. 1 Paper Fastener
This model was awarded an Official Ribbon at the National Export Exposition,
Philadelphia, PA, in 1899.
This 1899 Hotchkiss paper fastener (stapler) is in very good condition with
very little rust, and extremely well preserved.
It measures 4 and 1/2 inches high x 4 inches long.
The stapler looks like it should work, everything on
it moves very nicely, no grabbing or forcing of parts, the striker goes down
forcefully (springs still solid and strong) but comes up quickly and smoothly.
The most popular Victorian stapler today is the Hotchkiss.
These early paper fasteners are beautifully built and have a Victorian look and feel.
This model used what was known as the Herringbone stapler. It took a strong fist
to strike the head of the stapler to separate the staple from the strip.
To support an extra long strip of staples, early examples had a long curved tail on it.
Many collectors believe that all Hotchkiss Fasteners came with a tail,
but in fact, they did not.
My camera seems to want to take photos of it with a gold hue,
but in real life the original color is steel grey.
It has no staples and is obviously does not come with a tail.
