Victorian White Earthenware Sputum Mug
For your consideration:
Victorian White Earthenware Sputum Mug
Here is an absolutely charming late Victorian vintage white earthenware sputum mug
with removable funnel (for emptying) with an attractive floral decoration around
the body and to the funnel.
Fine gilt banded decoration around the rim, base and to handle.
Size: 3 and 1/4 inches high with rim diameter of 3 and 1/2 inches.
Condition: Very good condition with no damage. The photos gives a fair representation of condition.
At the local TB hospital, it was required that every single patient was allocated a sputum mug. It has been mentioned that the sound of that per-lop as the contents of the mug were tipped into the sluice was a sound that made ones stomach heave.
This sputum mug was probably not from a TB hospital, but belonged to a patient who was banished in their home in the hopes of recovering this awful and fatal disease.
Because of the stigma that came with TB, tuberculosis, consumption, phthisis, wasting disease, the white plague, etc., sputum mugs were usually destroyed and thrown out so few have survived to this day, especially with the funnel intact.
This lovely sputum mug comes from the private collection of a longtime collector of Apothecary Items.
