ULTRA RARE EMBALMING METAL EYE WEIGHTS!
For your consideration:
For those who collect really strange vintage Funeral, Embalming, Mortuary, Death items,
then here is something you probably don't have or have never seen.
What we have is not a pair of large fishing weights, but a pair of solid metal
EYE WEIGHTS. These were used by Undertakers and were placed on the eyes
of the dearly departed being so that the eye lids stay closed during the
embalming operation, and also to prevent swelling during embalming.
I am thinking they might have been made because in the old days, pennies were used
but the copper in the pennies tended to turn the eyes a morbid green color. I am
thinking that this did not take off as this is the first pair I have ever seen. I did
not even know these existed.
They are both in great condition and each one is embossed with raised letters with the
words "left eye" and "right eye" respectively.
On the reverse they are concave to allow placement over the eyeball
and lid -- (the eye socket) and were used during the 1920's and 1930's,
especially when the undertaker made house calls and embalmed the dead right there
in the bedroom or even the kitchen table.
An outstanding and extremely rare piece of Funeral History.
PLEASE NOTE: The photos tend to show them as gold color, they are not. They are more of
a silver fish weight color, like putty or lead. I have included a second set of photos
to give a better idea what the color really is.
