Vintage Kickapoo Quack Oil in Box

For your consideration:
This is a never opened bottle of "Kickapoo Oil" with original box and there is still a paper seal over the cork. Main ingredient is ETHER. A little history on ether: Ether was discovered in 1275 and was given the name "sweet vitriol" and was not changed to the name of ether until 1730.

In 1794, ether was used primarily to treat phthisis, catarrhal fever, bladder calculus, and scurvy. It was not used as for surgical anesthetic use until 1842. During that time, ether was also used for recreational use known as "ether frolics", which is about the same time when nitrous parties were also taking hold of those rascally youth.

Dr. William T.G. Morton experimented with ether in West Needham, Massachusetts and on September 30, 1846 at 9 p.m., he painlessly removed a tooth from city merchant Eben H. Frost.

The Kickapoo company is perhaps the best-known of all the Indian medicine companies. The original recipe for Kickapoo Oil was: Camphor, Myrrh, Capsicum, Oil of Cloves, Oil Sassafras, Sulphric Ether, Water, Opium 1½"0 of one grain, and alcohol 60%.

This bottle that is for sale is from 1919, after the Pure Food and Drug act, which meant of course, the opium and alcohol was removed from the recipe as well as in this bottle.

The front has an image of an indian chief, and one side is even written in three languages, Spanish, French and Italian.

The bottle is 7 inches tall, full label and in excellent condition. The box is missing the top and has a few moisture stains and other minor marks on it, but it is still quite sturdy and in great condition. It would make a very nice display piece. It does not seem to have the original circular with the bottle in the box.

Kickapoo Indian Sagwa....is the only remedy the Indians ever use, and has been known to them for ages. An Indian would as soon be without his horse, gun, or blanket, as without Sagwa.- Colonel William F. Cody, in a Kickapoo Testimonial.
This lovely bottle comes from the private collection of a longtime collector of Apothecary Items.

All bottles are sold only for collector purposes
and contents must not be used in any way. This item is being sold as a collectible only and not for use of the contents.
