Empty Caput Mortuum Large Delft Cannister with Lid
"Caput Mortuum" meaning: Caput Mortuum is a Latin term
meaning 'death's head'. In alchemy, it signified a useless substance left over from
a chemical operation such as sublimation. Alchemists represented this residue with
a stylized human skull, a literal death's head. In its current limited usage, the
caput mortuum represents decline and entropy.
This cannister was most likely used for storing real mummy which was used to
make brown oil paint and mummy medicine.
The cannister measures 8 and 1/2" tall and 4 and 3/4" in diameter at the bottom.
This cannister is a lovely blue tint with hand-painted blue items throughout.
The front has peacocks, flowers, angels with wings & crosses.
It is in excellent condition and is marked at the bottoms.
This (and the other Delft cannisters I have for sale) cannister was purchased
at an Estate Sale about 9 years ago, the original owner was a very old midwife.
