EGYPTIAN MUMMY ASSEMBLAGE FRAMED CURIO
Make mummy of my flesh and sell me to the apothecaries.
James Shirley (1596-1666), Bird in a Cage
Egyptian mummies were used as a commodity during the Middle Ages. It was very common for
Egyptian mummies that were preserved in bitumen to be ground up into a fine powder and
sold in order to be used as healing medicine.
After a while, buyers of mummy were advised to distinguish real mummy from the fake mummy.
The prime top A-grade of mummy most desired for medicinal use was shining and black without
broken bones, dirt, sand and small rocks mixed in it as filler.
The buyer was encouraged to put their nose right in there and inhale deeply. Real mummy would
have a definite odor to it, tan almost damp, earthy fresh smell, mixed with a sharp ammonia
scent. When burned, it should not smell like pitch

paper which reads:

adhered to it, three authentic and very real 3000 year old Egyptian Mummy Bones covered with
bitumen (all of which came from the proprietor of the Niagara Falls Museum) and mounted in the
center is an extremely rare 325-year-old engraving from 1683 (this is NOT a reproduction!) from
the book ''Description de L'Univers'' by Allain Manesson Mallet.
The engraving is titled Momies. All of this is mounted on vintage black cloth with Victorian gold
trim and framed in a beautiful vintage striking black wooden and gesso frame. It is signed and dated
on the back and is ready to hang in your own personal dime museum or sideshow.
I acquired a large cache of Egyptian mummy remains i.e. a large canister of bitumen, many pieces of mummy fabric/shroud/linen as well as quite a few miscellaneous smaller bones and teeth.
All of these vary rare pieces were given to me as a gift by the proprietor of the Niagara Falls Museum, to be used exclusively in my framed curio exhibits.
