HAND OF GLORY FRAMED CURIO EXHIBIT
The Hand of Glory is the hand of a man who has been hanged,
often specified as being the hand that "did the deed." After the hand had been cut off,
it would have been prepared with herbs and spices in an earthenware vessel and
allowed to cure.
The hand would only work best if the candle it used was made from the fat of someone
who died on the gallows, which was mixed with virgin wax and other ingredients.
The candle could only be extinquished with raw milk. Once a candle was either made
or procured somehow, it was placed in the hand and once lit, became the
Hand of Glory and would have rendered motionless all persons to whom it was presented.
For those who are purists, it was also suggested that the wick was to be made of
the hair of the dead man. Depending on who you ask, the Hand of Glory
purportedly also had the power to unlock any door it came across.

This beautiful framed exhibit is 26 and 1/2 inches high by 22 and 1/2 inches wide.
The image area is 20 inches high by 16 inches wide.
The three placards are all hand-illustrated using
pen-and-ink on hundred-year-old paper. They read as follows:
Hand of Glory
Dead Man's Hand with recipe on how to make one.
Dead Man's Candle with recipe on how to make one.
All three placards uses vintage black mounting corners and is mounted on vintage
black/blue velvet and framed in a very large, beautiful vintage gold wooden frame.
There is one partially burnt candle and one vintage human skeleton hand, both have been
hand-sewn onto the vintage velvet.
There is a possible issue with the upper right hand corner of the frame, as I believe it
may need to be further stablized. I had glued it and presently, it is currently very
stable but I worry about these type of things as I am not a carpenter. I will
rely upon the future owner to decide if the corner needs further stablizing or not.
It is signed and dated on the back and is ready to hang in your own personal
dime museum or sideshow.
