Stump dolls were very common during the Colonial period.
The Colonial stump doll usually consisted of a round head that
was originally faceless which was perched on a rudimentary torso shape.
There were only indications of stubby arms and there were no legs.
Stump dolls were usually stuffed with old rags and then clothed in long
flowing dresses. When there wasn't much fabric available, the doll was entirely
hand-painted, that meant the face, the clothing as well as any other distinctive
markings.
