Doctor Slipchin Blackpool
During the Black Death and the Great Plague of London, quacks known as
Plague Doctors would make housecalls to the sick in order to verify whether
or not they were infected with the plague or not.
The most famous image of the Plague Doctor is from an engraving by Paul Fürst
(after J Columbina), circa Rome 1656 titled "Doktor Schnabel von Rom" ("Doctor Beak from Rome"):
The Plague Doctor wore his own special "hazmat" type outfit, which consisted of a
squat black hat - this would indicate that the man was indeed a "doctor" -
along with a strange birds beak type mask that was filled with aromatic herbs and
spices so that the good doctor would not have to breathe in toxins or foul odors and his
eyes were hidden behind thick crystal type goggles.
He carried a cane which he would use to throttle at his "patients" in order for them
to keep a safe distance lest they come too close. He wore a sturdy
pair of leather gloves, a long, floor length gown type dress, the surface given a liberal
coat of wax in order to "waterproof" himself from infectious fluids and last but not least,
his feet were covered in full length sturdy leather boots.

This Plague Doctor has a vintage purple velvet hand-sewn hat, and tied around the brim is a wispy black weeper trail tied with a slip of red satin ribbon.
Around the head and neck is a lush brown velvet piece that is from the 1890s used as a head scarf.
The collar is a brilliant emerald green velvet from the 1870s and in remarkably good condition. The sleeves are made from a vintage burgundy red velvet, and each cuff is sewn with Victorian era French metallic gold vestment trim.
Belts were crafted from greenish gray woven trim circa 1870s (it came from the same garment as the brown velvet).
The tunic is black vintage velvet trimmed at the hem with Victorian era French metallic gold vestment trim.
The length of the doll is 22 inches tall.
The feet are sewn in the shape of a boot complete with heel, and hand-painted black.
His hands are made of bisque and tinted slightly in order to bring out the veins in his hands.
