Doctor Sticklebottom Nettlestone Plague Doctor Doll

Plague Doctors
During the Black Death and the Great Plague of London, quacks known as Plague Doctors would make housecalls to the sick in order to verify whether or not they were infected with the plague or not.

The most famous image of the Plague Doctor is from an engraving by Paul Fürst (after J Columbina), circa Rome 1656 titled "Doktor Schnabel von Rom" ("Doctor Beak from Rome"):

Der Doktor Schnabel von Rom

The Plague Doctor wore his own special "hazmat" type outfit, which consisted of a squat black hat - this would indicate that the man was indeed a "doctor" - along with a strange birds beak type mask that was filled with aromatic herbs and spices so that the good doctor would not have to breathe in toxins or foul odors and his eyes were hidden behind thick crystal type goggles.

He carried a cane which he would use to throttle at his "patients" in order for them to keep a safe distance lest they come too close. He wore a sturdy pair of leather gloves, a long, floor length gown type dress, the surface given a liberal coat of wax in order to "waterproof" himself from infectious fluids and last but not least, his feet were covered in full length sturdy leather boots.

------------------------------------------------------------

Doctor Sticklebottom Nettlestone is 22 inches tall, from the top of his black velvet hat to the bottom of his black hand-painted feet. He has articulated arms and legs, his face, hat and his entire outfit was completely hand-stitched, absolutely no sewing machines were used.

His face was hand-painted with acrylic paint, and for his glasses, vintage gold rimmed buttons were attached onto his face.

His hands are made of white vintage porcelain china.

Doctor Sticklebottom Nettlestone's smock is made from 120-year-old green cotton fabric, all hand-stitched.

His cape was made from a light vintage green upholstery fabric which drapes beautifully over the shoulders and hangs down the back past his feet.

The front of the cape is sewn around his waist with a belt made from Victorian French gold metal bullion trim,

The entire doll was hand-stitched from cotton fabric and his body was stuffed with 100% clean polyester fiber fill.
