PUNCH: Drawings and Illustrations

PUNCH:
Great Drawings and Illustrations 1841-1901

Stanley Appelbaum, Richard Kelly

Softbound: 144 pages
192 Works by Leech, Keene, du Maurier, May and 21 Others
Publisher: Dover Books
January 1, 1981

"Punch," also known as "The London Charivari" began as an imitation of the French satirical periodical "L'Assiette au Beurre" and became a British institution. This volume, edited by Stanley Appelbaum and Richard Kelly, reproduces 192 choice illustrations by over two-dozen staff and guest artists from the first half-century of the magazine's history.

Obviously 1841-1901 is basically the reign of Queen Victoria, which means artists like "Alfred Crowquil", George du Maurier, Linley Sambourne, and Sir John Tenniel. Most of the drawings, which are arranged alphabetically by artist, were engraved on wood by "Punch" graver Joseph Swain. They were chosen primarily for their graphic quality, although Victorian society, politics, personalities, and fashion are portrayed as well.

The drawings are dated along with an introduction and the volume begins with biographical entries about the artist. Several drawings have accompanying scraps of verse or satirical commentary. You will also find the familiar faces of Mr. Punch along with John Bull (and his American counterpart Brother Jonathan). When it comes to capturing the culture and politics of Victorian England, there is nothing superior to "Punch." True, the specific historical references will be lost on most of us, but reading between the lines you will still understand the gist of the barbs.

There are more subtleties here than we find with contemporary American editorial cartoons, but that just underscores the significant differences in time and place. Whether you are a student of the Age of Victoria in English history or a fan of magazine illustrations, this collection of "Punch" drawings and illustrations.

Very good condition, the spine is solid, all pages are clean and bright, no loose pages, and the front cover has minor scuff marks.
