The Doctor to the Dead
Grotesque Legends and Folk Tales of Old Charleston
John Bennett
Softbound
Pages: 304
Publisher: University of South Carolina Press
Date Published: February 1, 1995
A collection, in a new field, of folk story, myth, drolleries, macabre unreason,
that stems, primarily, from the Negro folk-say of Charleston, and which has been
recast into permanent form, minus dialect.
A company of old tales of death, mystery, bisarre incredibilities, this has four
long narratives, eighteen short sketches, that range from diabolic influence,
to demanding ghosts, buried treasure, enchantments, miracles, visitations, the dead
that are not dead, etc.
There is the death of the Wandering Jew, a doctor abscessed with ministering to the
dead, a woman who sells her soul that has daughter be whito, a famous black constable;
there is superstition, horror, terror and faith. Interacting material, never pedantic,
of regional and racial tradition and lore.
This book has been gently read, and the pages are clean and
bright with gentle light wear to it's cover.
