Rears and Sorebutt Parody Catalog
It was in 1792 when Robert B. Thomas published the Old Farmers Almanac, not only providing
weather forecasts, remedies, advice, but wisely the almanac catered to the outhouse culture
by having a hole already provided in it, ready for reading and wiping - making it the most
popular outhouse material, which of course made Mr. Thomas a wealthy man.
In 1857, mass-produced toilet paper finally debuted in the United States
as Gayetty's Medicated Paper. Joseph Gayetty's toilet paper consisted of loose flat
sheets of paper that were imprinted with the Gayetty name. The paper
was also pre-moistened and medicated with aloe and SOLD in boxes of 500 for 50 cents.
It was E. Irvin and Clarence Scott from Pennsylvania who brought us the toilet paper
on the roll. But because of Victorian sensibilities back then, one could not just waltz
into the store and demand a roll of toilet paper. The only way these rolls were available
were through private businesses, specifically hotels.
The only way to get a roll of toilet paper was to travel to say, the Waldorf Astoria
hotel and purchase a their toilet paper emblazoned with their logo on it. Because
of the incredible hassle in trying to obtain that elusive (and immoral) roll of toilet
paper, it was out of pure necessity that someone discovered the wonderful absorbancy of
the non-coated pages of the Sears and Roebuck’s catalogs.
When Sears decided to go upscale and print on glossy paper, an avalanche of complaints
was so intense (not to mention humorous) that Sears put out a spin-off catalog titled
"Rears and Sorebutt" in the 1930s. (Wow. Big corporations just have absolutely no sense of humor
these days, and to think that Sears was the one who put this out!)
Thankfully, about the time Sears went to glossy stock, toilet paper became widely available
throughout the United States. Toilet paper companies came up with new innovations and in 1935,
advertising dollars were spent with the proclamation of having the first splinter-free
toilet paper available for everyone!
This copy of "Rears and Sorebutt" is a racy catalog parody of the Sears Roebuck catalog, printed by TEX-ART from San Antonio, Texas - 1950s?
This book has been gently read, and the pages are clean and bright with gentle light wear to it's cover.
